The Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild has a new member: Dorie! Dorie recently moved to Michigan and is a web developer. In her free time she knits, quilts, and sews clothing. She has a blog here: tumblingblocks.net/blog.

Dorie also created a fabulous online quilt-planning tool called "Quiltr." It allows you to compare and preview fabric and color combinations—useful for planning an actual quilt. You can use a color wheel tool to fill in the pattern, or you can upload pictures of fabric from flickr! What a great idea. Check it out.

Welcome, Dorie! We can already see what a wonderful addition you will be to our guild.

Hello all - it was nice to see SO MANY of you guild members at the Sew-In yesterday. I hope everyone was able to accomplish great things! It sure looked like it...

Emily finished her crewel ABCs - so cute! And have you seen her daughter's adorably decorated nursery?

Debbie has patterns on her website (for free!) of a lovely Hug and Kiss pillow!

I made a little Valentine's Day craft - felt envelopes lined with cotton and stuffed with treats!

Lynn has made stunning progress on her string quilt...

... and has been knitting more fantastic socks! I know I would like to see a picture of Lynn taking this picture (assuming she's photographing her own feet)...

Kathy has been having some "Triangle Fun" - with amazing results! Check out HERE, too.

Jumbo Weekly Round-Up!

Hey gang!

Sorry there wasn't a Round-Up last week! Let's play catch-up...

Emily has sewn her daughter an adorable shirt, testing out a pattern for fellow Michigander, Rae!

Emily also recently revealed the hand-made projects she sewed for the holidays...

Debbie is cooking up a "Hug" and "Kiss" pillow pattern on her blog! Perfect for Valentine's day, obv.

Natalie has done it again, making a beautiful, flannel-backed quilt to place on her bed for winter... if winter ever comes.

She also made this gorgeous "stained glass" quilt.

...AND she revealed her Do. Good Stitches quilt...

Her amazing photos of this quilt at a castle also got the attention of the folks at Generation Q!

I've been making some pillows to sell on Etsy...

Lynn has been making string blocks, and adding the stunning detail of a solid triangle to make beautiful stars! Love this idea...

and she also cooked up some sweet liberated baskets for a bee...

Kathy has a little piece of play to show-off (tiny squares!). I love the thoughtful randomness of this baby...

And she has a stunning bow-tie quilt in colors to die for. Bright and beautiful!

So here are two possible options:

Option 1

Leave Friday, April 13 approx 8 am

arrive Waynesville/Fabric Shack just before noon

eat lunch

shop at Fabric Shack until 2 or 2:30

arrive Sewn by 3 or 3:30

leave Sewn at 5 (they close at 5)

go to hotel/have dinner/have fun

Saturday, April 14 - show all day

Sunday, April 15 - possible to go back to show and/or Fabric Shack, then go home

The show is open til 7 on Friday night (and Sat night) and from 10-3 on Sunday - admission is $10 per day or $25 for all three days. Fabric Shack is open 12-5 on Sunday.

Option 2

Leave sometime Friday afternoon and just get ourselves to the hotel.

Saturday

go to Sewn at 10, leave by 11:30 or 12

go to show from 12 or so on.

Sunday

possibly return to show in morning but leave by 1

arrive at Fabric Shack by 2

leave Fabric Shack by 3:30 or 4

arrive home by 8.

Costs: For 4 people in a hotel room (2 double beds) the cost would be $66 hotel, approx $25 for gas, $10 show ticket = about $100 plus food at about $120 for three days totals $220. Having only two people in a hotel room would add $66 total to your trip. I based hotel costs on the Milennium Hotel since it was the cheapest and it is across the street from the show. When I tried the online reservations it said there were no quad rooms left, but I called and they said quads were still available.

I have a slight preference for Option 1 since it gives us all day Saturday for the show. The last time I went to this show when it was in Chicago, I was there for about 5-6 hours, whipped through the vendors and still only got to about half of them.

We should try to make our decisions soon as the hotel will fill up and it just makes it more complicated if we are farther from the show. Either leave comments to this post if you have questions or email me.

Meeting Minutes from 1/25/12

Next Meeting: Wednesday, Feb 29th - 6:30pm Meeting at Maker Works
Next Sew-In: February 12th, 12 - 4pm at Maker Works.

What to bring for the next meeting: If you want to participate in a charm-square swap, bring 12 charm squares (5") all of the same fabric to the next meeting. Also - think of a theme idea for a future guild challenge. It could be something abstract ("Rain!") or more direct ("Squares!"). We will select a theme at the next meeting and discuss this challenge further.

Old Business:

Discussed the January Retreat and are planning another weekend trip in the end of June.
Evaluated the progress of our Jay McCarroll Habit Charity Quilt - will be basted at the next sew-in and quilted by Natalie.

New Business:

Discussed road trips to future quilt shows throughout 2012.
Discussed two quilt challenges that have fast-approaching deadlines:

The Modern Quilt Guild Showcase for the International Quilt Festival(s) is accepting submissions until March 2. You can submit two quilts. More information HERE
There is a Tangerine Tango Quilt Challenge happening on flickr, also with the deadline of March 2. You can enter 1 mini-quilt (pillow, runner, etc...) and 1 larger quilt. More information HERE.

Bring and Brag:

Discussed pressing: do you press toward the darkest fabric or do you press your seams open? Why? Debbie often chooses to press towards the darkest fabric, but advises you to make the best decision based on the quilt pattern - sometimes you have to press the seams open when the intersections of blocks prevent nested seams.
Discussed the best batting options for blankets that will be hand-quilted: Kathy recommends Quilter's Dream Cotton Select or Wool.

There were 1000 goodies consumed in honor of the beautiful Emily's birthday, and we were all elated to have the young Miss Penelope join in our discussions.

Hello Everyone!

Let's take a look at what our wonderful guild members have crafted this past week...

Debbie has this beautiful Christmas quilt completed a stunning 11 months early for next year's celebrations. : ) Love the design here - almost looks a little like houndstooth, no?

She also is playing with a stack of Malka Dubrawsky fabric, which makes me crazy jealous.

Did you know you can stalk Brenda's Bust Yo Scraps quilt-along participants over on flickr? Check it.

Natalie has an update on her Do. Good Stitches bee! showing a glimpse of a beautiful blanket she's quilting...

She also has a warm and wonderful looking Folksy Flannel quilt to show. Love it - wish I had it - I'm *chilling* out in front of the space heater right now!

Lynn has a stunner here with this Crazy Love quilt. So gorgeous and I love the color choice and placement of the Kaufman blue fabric. Awesome!

Lynn also reported on her productive time at The Retreat - she made 50 tiny stars! Whew!

I made some electronics cases recently...

and am working on a very non-modern, embroidery-heavy quilt for my Pa...

Kathy blogged about her gorgeous "Daisies in Kaffe's Garden" quilt that we were lucky enough to see in a recent meeting. So beautiful and the quilting details really are the perfect touch.

I'm so excited to see some sewing going on over on Rossie's page. Check out this awesome quilted pillow she made for a friend! Definitely inspired by this sunrise layout.

And Ronit has this lovely "Organic Imperfection" quilt, which also has a super-cool backing.

Retreat Recap

The first Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild retreat has come and gone! Eleven of us (eight from AAMQG and three modern quilters from Canada) had a great time sewing and sewing and sewing some more.

We went to the Hankerd Inn just west of Chelsea, MI. It is a lovely facility with wonderfully spacious rooms, a great sewing space and yummy meals provided.

I hope everyone is having / had a great time at the retreat who was able to go! I am so excited to hear all about it and to see the projects that were worked on during the festivities.

Let's kick things off by offering a big CONGRATULATIONS to Emily who welcomed her new little baby Penelope into this world! And look at the lovely blanket Penelope gets to snuggle with! Love the doilies...

Debbie has a new applique project in the works. Her precise stitching is an inspiration! And check out her blog for a mosaic on many of her 2011 completed projects - also very inspiring!

Brenda is continuing her "Bust Yo Scraps!" Quilt-Along - such a fun looking project!

Natalie has a very lovely new quilt to show. Love the colors! And she also has a broken rib, which sounds awful. Feel better, Natalie!

Hello everybody! Let's take a look at what everyone's been crafting this past week...

Emily has a beautiful quilt-top basted and ready to quilt...

and her afghan is coming along nicely!

Debbie made this fabulous Triangle Maze quilt for giveaway week. Love the color combinations, and the idea of using different colors of thread for the vertical and horizontal quilting lines!

Brenda wrote up a very helpful review of EQ7. If you're thinking about purchasing the software, it is definitely worth the read. She's working on a quilt she designed using the program! Can't wait to see.

Speaking of Brenda, Lynn made a quilt called "Brenda's Stars" and now Brenda is selling a bundle of fabric that you can buy to re-create Lynn's beautiful quilt. Very cool!

Lynn also is working on quilting this amazing blanket featuring 3-inch liberated stars. I'm so inspired by her quilting design and her incredible precision!

Kathy is making these glorious roses, and reading her post about trouble-shooting a problematic design was fascinating!

I have been cranking out these "quilted" ornaments...

and I made this reverse-appliqued table runner.

Becky has made herself some cute pillowcases!

and Ronit is working on this really awesome October do Good Stitches bee quilt. I love this block!

The Quilting Retreat is fast approaching! If you are interested in going but haven't told Brenda yet, please do. Please also pay her the $50 deposit. And if you are interested in car-pooling, please also let Brenda know.
Guild Membership cards were distributed. With these cards you can get discounts at many quilting and fabric supply stores.
Our charity quilts will be completed after the new year and distributed to Safe House and Mott's Children's Hospital.

New Business:

If you are interested in teaching a sewing class (like a "make and take") or a knitting/crocheting class at Maker Works, contact Thea.
There is a new fabric store opening this weekend (Dec 3) on State Circle.
Things to ponder: Are we interested in actively pursuing new members? Are you as excited as I am about silk-screening some A2MQG t-shirts? What about re-electing officers next month?

We then did show-and-tell and the ornament swap.

Just a note: there will be no Sew-In for January, due to the retreat.

Hello everyone! As promised, here is out extra-large Weekly Round-Up covering the crafts produced by our wonderful guild members throughout the past two weeks...

Kathy has started a project featuring wonky trees and maybe a couple of wonky houses. It looks amazing so far!

Also - did you know 11-11-11 was corduroy appreciation day? Get it? Because 11-11 kind of looks like the wales on corduroy? Anyway, Kathy celebrated by making this stunner out of the fabric-of-the-day! I never considered corduroy for quilting before, but this is truly inspiring.

Ronit made a freakin' gorgeous Fall Scarf that I will steal at my first opportunity.

Anna is working on hand quilting her gorgeous double wedding ring quilt! ACK can't wait to see.

Quilting Retreat!

Here is a message from Brenda regarding the quilt retreat!

The quilting retreat is on the way! I spoke with the owner at the Hankerd Inn:

The only weekend available is the first weekend in January.

The cost for the weekend (6-8) is $130 and includes 5 meals:
dinner Fri, 3 meals Saturday and breakfast Sunday.
For those of us wanting to add on Thursday night it is $35 and if you want a meal, an extra $10.

I will need a $50 deposit by the next meeting to book your spot. The minimum to book is 12 people, so please let me know asap if you are interested. The rooms are double occupancy.

I would also like to extend the invitation to the ladies from Brighton as well if that's okay with everyone.

We had a wonderful meeting Wednesday night at MakerWorks.

Important Dates:

Next Sew-In: Sunday, Nov 13th - 12pm - 4pm at Maker Works
Next Meeting: Wednesday, Nov 30 - 6:30pm Meeting

What to bring for the next meeting: If you want to participate in another "Yankee Swap," bring a non-denominational hanging bauble (i.e. "ornament") to the next meeting. Think around 3 x 3 inches. There are no real size constraints - just don't be weird! ; )

Old Business:

Still planning on a January retreat to the Hankerd Inn. Have to research available dates. This is somethinig that should be investigated ASAP. Brenda said she would contact.
Business cards will hopefully be done by the next meeting.

New Business:

Natalie told us about her experience at the Sewing Summit and suggested that we do a swap with the Idaho Modern Quilter's Guild. Natalie said she'd contact them.
We have a new member! Welcome Jen! Jen moved here from Austin to work as an attorney with the University of Michigan. She blogs HERE and flickrs HERE.

We then did show-and-tell, the accessory swap, and worked on our Habitat Charity Quilt.

For the Habitat quilt, Ashley took home one block to embroider "Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild 2011" that we will put on the back of the larger quilt. Ginia took the small quilt and Anna took the large quilt.

We decided to do another swap the next meeting with ornaments, to be hung on Christmas trees or as generic home decor.

Anna took pictures, and we will share those soon!

Amish quilts in Flint

Hi everyone,
Amish quilts have had a huge influence on my quilting. I've been wanting to get up to the exhibit on Amish quilts at the Flint Institute of Arts, but my schedule has been too booked. The exhibit ends in a few weeks and my Saturday just cleared up - so I am going! Anyone want to come?

Logistical details: It will take about an hour traveling time each way. The exhibit is open 10 am to 5 pm and admission is $7 for adults. I am happy to drive. Email me right away if you have questions and/or want to go!

Paloma has a wonderful Wagon Wheel block tutorial on her blog. I can't wait to try it! She even does the math for fabric requirements using this block for various sized quilts. So handy!

Debbie has been on a quilting retreat and offered these previews of the projects she's tackled. Can't wait to see how they turn out!

I've been hosting a little costume party over at my blog, for anyone looking for inspiration/instructions on a variety of Halloween Costumes. Here's my baby, Henry, in the Yoda costume I finished this week:

We had a wonderful meeting last night at MakerWorks.

Important Dates:

What to bring for the next meeting: If you want to participate in another "Yankee Swap," bring a sewn accessory that you've made. Can be for person or for home (i.e. a headband, a hot-pad, etc...)

We're going to work on the charity quilt and our own projects.

Ana has been researching
Toronto has suggested meeting half-way for a joint retreat.
Lynn suggested Hankard Inn near Chelsea, which would allow people to
visit even if they couldn't stay overnight. People seemed excited
about that possibility.
The plan is to work on our own projects, not have classes etc.

(3) member cards
Ana will print them out and bring to next meeting
Brenda will send her the files and the names

New business:
(1) We don't seem to have a secretary anymore. It was decided to
rotate the job. Several people are happy to do it, but can't commit
to always being there. Jenna asked that whoever does the minutes is
quick to at least send out the details about the next meeting and
sew-in. Dates, times, supplies, plan, etc.

(2) Brighton Modern Quilt Guild may be dissolving; anyone from that
guild is welcome to come to Ann Arbor.

(3) T-Shirts. There's a plan afoot to get silk-screening equipment
and screen our logo onto t-shirts and bags and such. It was discussed
casually, something for next meeting's agenda.

Member Announcements:
Paloma is going to be at Quilt Market in Houston.
Natalie is going to The Sewing Summit.
Paloma is moving to South American (Argentina I think) and will be
opening the first Modern Quilt Guild when she gets there!
Lynn has a laptop case that will be in a booth at Quilt Market.
Two of our members will have their work in the 100 Days of Modern Quilts

If you are making Habitat blocks (12" finished) andhaven't turned them in yet, please bring them to the September Sew-In (Sept 11)or the September meeting (Sept 28) at MakerWorks (3765 Plaza Drive, AA).

Despite quite a lot of rain, those of us who went on theAugust shop hop had a great time. Whenwe visited Sew Unique Threads in Battle Creek many of us admired their AmyButler Weekender Bags. Sue, (theowner/manager?), offered to teach a class on this pattern for us for free if webuy our supplies from her. Brenda islooking into whether that includes the pattern and some dates. (See this blog post to view the pattern). Seven or eight people indicated that theywould be interested.

Brenda reported that Anna is interested in organizing asewing retreat. This was greeted withgeneral enthusiasm. Suggestions includeda price range of $100 - $150 and a time of early November or January orFebruary.

Brenda passed around three solid fabrics to see if we couldguess which ones were Kona, Free Spirit, or Moda. Most of us could not, but it was fun to try!

Natalie is attending the Sewing Summit in Salt Lake Citynext month and asked if anyone else was going. Unfortunately, nobody present was planning to go.

Our next Sew-in will be at MakerWorks on Sept 11 from 12-4.

For our Sept meeting (Sept 28 at MakerWorks), it was decidedto do another Yankee fat quarter swap. Bring three fat quarters, disguised or not as you choose, and we'll swapand steal! It was lots of fun last time!

Road trip!

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the delay in getting details to you on our mini shop hop. I looked around on the web and didn't have much luck finding a lot of other quilt shops in the Battle Creek area.

Our main destination will be Sew Unique in Battle Creek. Andrea from the Brighton Modern Quilters and I met her at a quilt show in May and thought it would be fun to go and see her shop. The photo is from their website.

Another possible stop is Quilts at the Marshall House in Marshall. I wouldn't say they have lots of modern fabrics specifically, but they certainly have lots of fabric. I found two other shops in the area, Quilt N Go in East Leroy and Quilts Plus in Kalamazoo, but neither has a website so I don't know if we want to give them a try or not.

So I thought we could meet about 9:30 next Saturday and make our way to Sew Unique first. By the time we finish there it may be lunch time and we could eat and then decide what to do next or we could go on to another shop. I think things will be pretty flexible.

Let me (Debbie) know as soon as you can if you want to go. Once I know who is going we can work out who is driving and meeting places. If you are willing to drive, let me know how many people fit in your vehicle.

I'm looking forward to a fun day next Saturday - hope to see some of you at the Sew-In tomorrow too!

Jay McCarroll - FreeSpirit Quilt

The wonderful folks at FreeSpirit Quilting Fabric were nice enough to donate some Jay McCarroll fabric to our group.

We decided to make a charity quilt using the fabrics. Please feel free to mix the McCarroll fabrics with coordinating solids to make as many 12" (finished size) blocks as you can! That's 12.5" blocks accounting for seam allowance. Bring what you've created to our next meeting (August 31).

If you were unable to grab some of the McCarroll fabrics at our last meeting, but you feel like participating, maybe you could just make some blocks out of solids?

Emily has been busy making a soft Book of Colors as a commissioned gift for a baby...

Debbie taught a class on making her beautiful Celebration Table Runner.

Ginia just recently started her own quilting blog and has a lot of great tips on dying your own fabrics! She also recently took a class on sewing Free Motion Feathers.

Natalie's been busy making this adorable Disappearing Nine-Patch Baby Quilt...

and she's also very close to finishing this beautiful quilt using a lot of Flea Market Fancy!

Anna has been working on a double wedding ring quilt, following the quilt-along hosted by the Plaid Scottie. I love these colors!

Sewing Day!

Hello Members!

We will have a sewing day at the Quilting Season in Saline on Sunday, August 14th at 12pm. We will be there probably until around 4pm.

There is plenty of space to sew, so bring your machine, cutting boards, ironing boards, whatever you want! Please also bring a couple of bucks to donate (other groups who use the space bring $10 a person, but bring whatever makes sense for you financially - there's no formal rate). Also, feel free to bring a snack!

Kona Charm Pack Challenge

Our guild was so excited to participate in the Kona "No Prints Allowed" challenge sponsored by Robert Kaufman!

Participating members picked a charm pack and then went to work making quilts using at least 30 of the charms in the pack and adding up to 3 additional Kona solids.

The wonderful people over at Modern Quilt Relish were nice enough to guest judge our quilts, and they chose Natalie for the winner!

We also had our members pick a Guild Favorite, and they chose Jenna's quilt.

And here's a little mosaic featuring the other amazing quilts made for this challenge!

August Shop Hop!

Hi everyone,

Sorry I didn't get this out before now. I'm polling as to who would like to go on our western MI shop hop.

The dates we are looking at are Aug 20 or 27. If you are seriously interested in going, please let me know which date or dates you could go. I'm also polling the Brighton Modern Quilters and we'll see which dates gets the most people.

So far, we don't have a specific itinerary. Sew Unique in Battle Creek is one definite destination, but not sure about the rest. Someone mentioned Fields Fabrics in Holland as a possibility. Also Quilts at the Marshall House is a possibility -they don't have a lot of really modern designer fabrics, but they do have a lot of great fabric. If you have any ideas about other shops, please let me know and we'll get the plans organized a bit more.
